With all of the other stuff we had going on over the weekend, I forgot to mention that poor little seven died on the weekend. She'd been pretty lethargic over the past couple of weeks and really started to fail at the end of last week. Sunday morning, she passed away.
We called her Seven because we got her on our 7th anniversary. We'd have had her 3 years in August. She was a spunky little fish, super cute with telescopic eyes. We'll really miss her!
Didja watch da Idol last night? We saw part of it. To be honest, we've watched it this season without really liking anyone. I disliked a lot of folks (like that Gokey guy) and honestly don't care one way or the other about who wins (although I think Adam deserves it a little more than Kris).
the week is whizzing by for me. Short weeks always do, although I'm working Friday night and Saturday so it'll not be all that short in the end. I'll get some time off in lieu of working on the weekend so it's not bad at all, in fact, it was something I volunteered for. Next week, we may go up to Montreal for a day trip. It's been almost 2 years since we've been there and there are a couple of things we wanted to do and see and a day trip seemed like a good idea. I love Montreal. I love how pretty it is, and how cool it is and how you can function perfectly well without having to speak french. We have, however, been mocked (well our van has been mocked) for having Ontario plates on it but we just suck it up and don't take it personally!

so long chocolate
Our little chocolate oranda died last night. she's been really sick for a while (she caught part of whatever it was that killed Roger) but had been making some improvement since we moved her into the hospital tank.
Chocolate was a weird little fish. When we brought her home she was brown. She later turned gold then orange and then white. We kind of think she had some kind of brain tumor because she got this strange growth on her head over the past couple of weeks. It didn't seem to bother her until yesterday. She didn't move around a whole lot and at dinner time last night, she didn't eat (not like Chocolate at all!). On our way to bed last night we noticed that she was dead. I don't think that she'd been dead for very long though.
I'm pretty sure that orandas are supposed to live longer than 2.5 years but she was a little bit strange so who knows. We never know how old the fish are when we bring them home. She was a really cute fish and we'll miss her a lot but I'm glad that she's not suffering anymore.

bumpy noggin
Apparently, according to many people who keep sending me emails, I have some kind of erectile dysfunction. It's very weird and wasn't something I was aware of until I got these emails.
About ten minutes ago, I was feeling so exhausted that I wanted to go to bed. Right now though, I'm feeling a little better. I need to get a good rest tonight because I have a really long day tomorrow.
I'm meeting my colleagues at 10:30 a.m. and we're heading out of town. At the moment, it's looking like it'll be around 3 a.m. before our day ends. With any kind of luck it won't be that late but I'm not holding my breath.
In fish news, chocolate looks worse but seems to be acting "better." She's swimming around and being silly and generally acting more like a fish. So, yeah, yay!

how convenient!
Our chocolate oranda fish is still sick, I think. About 4 weeks ago, we had to take her out of the big tank because she was really weak and the other fish were picking on her.
We got her into a hospital tank in my office and she's been doing really well up until the past few days. I noticed a couple of weeks ago that she had these little bumps on her head. I didn't think much of it because a couple of our fish have gone through that, a metomorphosis I guess you'd call it.
Tonight though, the bump is really red looking and she's been hanging out near the tank heater a lot. At meal time, she's very active and she's got a good appetite. I don't know if she'll ever bounce back from that parasitic infection that she had. It's tough to watch for sure.
In other, non-fish related news, I'm tired. Sleep is good but work is really draining. Fortunately, in approximately 54 hours (but who's counting), I can relax. Hopefully I'll get more sleep too. That would be good.

recovery
A while ago, one of our goldfish, Roger, died. He had a parasitic infection, I wrote a little bit about him at the time. The other two goldfish in the tank were infected too. Mojo, a large goldfish, was okay but Chocolate (our chocolate oranda who was brown when we got her and has turned gold and orange and is now white) got quite sick. She seemed to be doing much better until this week. The other fish in the tank were picking on her and on Thursday night, I think that they would have killed her if we hadn't moved into the hospital tank.
When we went to bed on Thursday night, I thought for sure that she'd die in the night. She was floating upside down when we went to bed. In the morning though, she had righted herself and didn't seem as swollen. Tonight, as I type this, she's in a brand new tank, all by herself, in my office. She's too big to stay in the little hospital tank and too weak to go back into the tank with other fish. Our thought is that we'll let her heal up in her own tank and then get her another little fish as a buddy. She seems to be much happier tonight than I've seen her in days.
Mark's head had cleared by the time we got up this morning. Mine was in bad shape though. We've been having some strange weather and it really made my head pound earlier today. I've never had a headache which made me light sensitive before. It was not a lot of fun and I have a lot of sympathy for folks who experience this regularly. Mark had to close the curtains in the living room, I couldn't open my eyes until he had. Too weird.
Last night, we taped "the next great american band." Honestly, we thought that it would take us ten minutes to watch the 2 hour show and I didn't imagine for a second that I'd find a band that I'd like but I did! They are from Florida of all places and are called Très bien!. The song they performed was an "original" composition but it sounded a lot like something from "Rubber Soul." I like all of their influences, they dress like a band my brother would be in and they were a lot of fun. Of course, anything I like on a show like this is usually jinxed so they may not be around for long! The show was a very pleasant surprise. We may even watch it again next week.
Well I should scoot I guess. I sort of dicked around all day today so I have a bunch of housework to do tomorrow. Fun huh??

snoozing fish
When I was a kid, I used to really like "octopus's garden." I remember singing it a lot, at the time though, I have a feeling that the inspiration came more from sesame street and less from the beatles.
Sometimes, when I watch our fish, I hum the tune and sing along in my head (don't want to scare them cute fishies with my horrible singing now). They are cute and while they live in a tank and not "under the sea" I sing the tune anyway. Of course, I always think that fish live in the sea, rather than under the sea, cuz under the sea is all mucky and rocky and it's not easy to swim in rocks and muck.
However, to argue with Ringo would be not be a good thing, especially when he is the only cool beatle left!

salad bar
the white fish in this photo is named Chocolate. she (we think she's a she) is a chocolate oranda. when we brought her home she was brown. later on, she turned gold, then orange and most recently white.
she's a pretty funny fish, she spends a lot of time eating bubbles. recently, she scared us because she started swimming upside down and spending a lot of time at the top of the tank. I looked into it and she seemed to be exhibing symptoms of swim bladder disorder. it's suggested that you soak food and force fish to eat at the bottom of the tank to prevent them from sucking in air. we already do that a lot and after she's dug around in the rocks for food, she's right back at it, eating bubbles again.
it was also suggested that the weird floating/swimming could be the result of constipation. Mark found these lettuce clips at the pet store and we now have them in both tanks. they are the coolest things. you just put a piece of lettuce in the clip, put it in the tank and watch the fish go nuts. it's like a shoving match at a salad bar. hilarious.
it also seemed to have helped the constipation issue (not to mention create really green poop) with chocolate and the rest of the fish are loving it too. lettuce? who knew! it's definitely cheap and easy. one article I read suggested surgery, on a fish. I'm glad that the lettuce worked because surgery on a fish is not an option for me.

what up syd?
betta fish have minds of their own. I don't think that they are stupid like some folks would have you believe. our betta, syd, definitely has a personality and a stubborn streak.
he's been sulking for a few days. at first we thought that his tank needed cleaning. mark cleaned it. then we thought that water wasn't warm enough, we turned up the heater. then we figured that maybe his food was stale, we bought new stuff last night.
I still can't tell if he's eating. everything I read and the fish people I talk to say that he's okay, he looks good. he's just in a pissy mood.
still, it bothers me. after dr. zoidberg died suddenly last fall, I am really cautious around syd. our goldfish, I don't worry so much about but him, I do.
