we ended up, as I predicted, getting the one we found in the flyer. It's a very nice barbecue and Mark and Tom put it together in the rain today.

because of the rain, we couldn't use it tonight but it is all together and hopefully tomorrow it'll be nice out and we'll get to use it.

it's head and shoulders above our old one and it hooks up to the gas line on our deck. oh, and it's shiny.

very shiny!

It is amazing, although not entirely surprising, how much work you can get done when you don't have any meetings booked. Both yesterday, and today, I did not have any meetings so I was actually able to be at my desk, getting stuff done. It's a nice feeling, starting the weekend knowing that I've crossed so many things off of my "to-do" list.

Getting stuff done aside, today was a little odd. One of my co-workers has been a contract / mat-leave replacement and today was her last day. Because of one thing and another, I was the only person in the office with her all day. I felt kind of bad for her because the one woman she's particularly close with was out at a training session all day. This person, the one who is leaving, is very creative and I'm sure she'll have no problem finding something else but, it was really sad all the same. Not to mention, it was awkward too because, again, it was just me there all day.

We're definitely shopping for a barbecue tomorrow. We've been through the flyers and found the one we think we want. Of course, we want to check out 2 or 3 other stores but I have a feeling that we'll end up with the one we've picked from the flyers. Mark' s really looking forward to cooking on a grill that is actually working properly. I'm looking forward to not seeing flakes of barbecue all over the deck from where it's literally falling apart!

Mark has done an excellent job of nursing it along for the past year or so but it's really had the biscuit. We bought it in the spring of 2001 and it's almost completely pooched. It was not an expensive one but it was practical. He's had to replace the burner on it at least once and the brick things a couple of times. Since we had natural gas brought to the house (shortly after we moved in back in 2005) we have talked about either getting a new barbecue which can work with natural gas, or purchasing a conversion kit for our old one. Given how decrepit this old one is, we're probably going to get a new one this weekend.

We use it a lot so it'll be nice to have it on the natural gas line and not have to bother with propane. I just hope that the weather is nice this weekend so we can assemble it and get using it. It would suck, big time, to buy a new one and be rained out!

free lunch

Don't ever let anyone tell you that this is no such thing as a free lunch. Today, I had a free lunch! The directors in our office sent all of us admin types downtown, to a nice waterfront hotel, for a slap-up meal. It was such a nice treat. We also were given flowers and some chocolate and entered into a draw for a shopping spree / spa day / night in nice waterfront hotel. I don't think that I will win but it's nice all the same.

Ordinarily, I eat a sandwich and some raw carrots at my desk so to actually get out of the office for a couple of hours was very nice. I really enjoyed catching up with "the girls" from the other functional units of our department. It's a big place, I think we have about 120 people in total in our area so there were about 20 or so admin types at lunch.

Of course, tonight, because we had a bit meal at lunch (salmon, it was delicious!), I'm not overly hungry for dinner but I promised to cook all the same. I hope Mark doesn't mind something vegetarian-ish for a change.

hey dad, happy birthday!

Many folks would be retiring at 65 but dad took early retirement a few years ago so he's well practiced in the art of retirement. He often jokes that he needs to go back to work to have a day off. But I don't know if I really I believe that. I'm sure my mum would let him have a day off if he asked really nicely!

We popped by my parents' place after work for a visit and a piece of cake. It was nice to see them. On Easter weekend, we were there for lunch but I wasn't feeling all that great so we cut the visit short. I find that in the spring and summer, we tend to see them more often. It's not like they live a million miles away but in the winter, we just don't go far at all. Anyway, my dad's not one who likes to be made a fuss about but I like to at least see him face to face on his birthday, when I can.

muggy april?

it was a dark and stormy night...

We are having the weirdest storm right now. I probably shouldn't be anywhere near the computer but I'm a rebel, yanno!?

After work tonight, Mark and I were able to get some errands done. These were things that we really should have done on the weekend but didn't. It was so hot and humid when we got to Costco that we almost didn't want to step out of the walk-in produce cooler. Of course, eventually we did but honestly, it shouldn't be muggy in April!!

We got home with about five minutes to spare before the sky just opened up. Thunder, lightning, everything. The sun's not set yet though so, if the storm pushes through quickly, we may just see a rainbow tonight.

I'm waking up to nuts

it's deck time!
Originally uploaded by Julep67.
For the first year or so that we lived in this house, we had weirdly quiet neighbours on the western side of us. They pretty much kept completely to themselves and didn't really bother with anyone.

In June or July 2006, we got some new neighbours. For the most part, they too keep to themselves. One thing they do do, which drives me batty, is slam their car doors. The slam them so hard sometimes, that the entire house shakes. It's just strange and annoying.

Last night, I woke up suddenly, about 2 hours after I'd gone to sleep. I'd been having a really lovely dream about being on a trip to Italy one second and the next, I was wide-eyed and awake. Mark was awake too. It was the car door. It seems really nuts to me for a couple of reasons... one being, you live in a neighbourhood, close to other folks, some consideration to this must be made; the other would be that this cannot be good for their vehicle.

I suppose this is the trade off that one must make for municipal water and access to high speed internet (the two things which kept us from buying a house in the country).

sprung clean

finally, spring cleaning!!
Originally uploaded by Julep67.
Well, I got started on it today anyway. It felt so great to have the windows wide open and to get rid of some of the winter's dust and mess.

While I puttered in the house, Mark worked in the shed. It is a gross mess, much worse than I thought it would be. The squirrels chewed into a bag of cement, peed in it and than chewed on the pee cement. Gross huh?

Tomorrow, we both have a few little jobs to finish up. It feels really nice to be getting stuff sorted out. Mark even pulled out the patio furniture so we sat outside for a bit this afternoon. Over the winter, I really miss having coffee on the deck. Tomorrow morning though, finger's crossed, I'll be doing just that. Hurray for spring, finally!!

the weather was incredibly gorgeous here today. also, my allergies/cold/whatever it was seems to have gone away so I was feeling much better at work today.

Mark, unfortunately, what hit with a migraine earlier this afternoon. Something big must have changed with the air pressure. We came straight home from work so he could have a nap.

I'm sure that if he has an early night tonight, he'll be better tomorrow. I hope so anyway. It's supposed to hit 20 tomorrow and we'd like to get some spring cleaning / yard work started.

happy "first real" weekend of spring folks!

update

I consumed mass quantities of garlic today and somehow that has made me feel better. I also took a bunch of advil cold & sinus which may have helped as well.

Either way, I refuse to give into the germs. Today was a gorgeous, warm, sunny day and it's supposed to be like this all weekend. We've borrowed a friends industrial pressure washer and we plan to clean everything in the yard, house included, this weekend.

Snot be gone! I wanna play with the pressure washer!!!

snot!

I think my cold might be back.

On Tuesday, I thought I was getting sick. I took lots of drugs and went to bed early and felt great yesterday.

Today though, I'm coughing and spitting and blowing my nose.

Crap!!

I cannot get sick, I'm too busy to be sick.

Yuck!!!

beyond amused

Originally uploaded by Julep67.
When we got home tonight, there was a message on our voice mail from Mark's brother. Given that Mark's dad is dead and buried, we never expected to hear from him again, we'd have preferred that actually. This is a man who didn't have the decency to go to his own mother's funeral. I could give you a huge long list of all of the ways that this guy has behaved in a less than honourable fashion over the years but quite frankly, it would seem like I was making it up if I did post it.

Joe was buried last year, in September. We've recently made arrangements to have the engraving on the stone finished so that we can have an unveiling. Apparently, "he can get us a deal" on the engraving. Mark was pretty pissed at the message, so was I. The last time we heard from him was via a lawyer he'd hired to find out if he was mentioned in Joe's will (he wasn't). After that, we figured that we never hear from him again.

Here is a guy who, in the five years that his father lived in Kingston, made the trip from Toronto to visit only once. At that time, he walked into Joe's room at the nursing home and made an insulting remark to him.

Anyway, I offered to call him back, explain that everything was under control and to ask him, politely, to never call here again. When I called him, I used my "work voice" on the phone, introduced myself (the two times I've been in the same room with him he refused to speak to me) and told him that we had received his message but that everything was already arranged and had been for some time.

After that, I told him that Mark would appreciate it if he didn't phone us anymore. He said, "drop dead lady" and hung up the phone. Mark was pissed. Mark took the phone, called the jerk back and, well, voices were raised, things were said and by the end of the conversation, the brother and his wife were arguing with each other on the phone. Mark bated them brilliantly. Over the years, their son has kept in touch with Mark so we've heard some pretty crazy stories about what goes on in their household. They had no idea that Mark knew some pretty sketchy stuff about them. The pair of them were both on the phone and getting really defensive. Eventually, they turned on each other. Mark held the phone up and I could hear them yelling at each other. These people are nuts.

It was really amusing. Mark's held on to a lot of anger toward his brother over the years. Last night, was able to release it because he finally saw that his brother is living in his very own, special kind of hell. I know this is schadenfreude but seriously, after the amount of pain and suffering Mark's brother inflicted on everyone in their family (not only Mark but his parents, his aunt and uncle, this guy's own children), it's comforting to know that he's miserable.

Fortunately, he's not been invited to the unveiling. He doesn't even know that we have one arranged. The best part really, about all of this is that Mark's finally been able to let go of all the venom he's felt and just laugh at the schmuck.

groggy

Originally uploaded by Julep67.
For some reason, last night and Sunday night, I didn't sleep well. About once every hour or so, I'd wake up, look at the clock, and then take about 15 minutes to fall back to sleep. It also seemed to take me a really long time to fall asleep.

I'm sleepy, and tired. I think that maybe some noisy neighbour or critter is waking me up, banging around out in the neighbourhood.

it's odd. ordinarily, I'm a very good sleeper. I close my eyes, I fall asleep, I don't fall out of bed too often. it's all very orderly.

I hate not sleeping well. It makes me feel tired and today, for a few moments this afternoon, I thought I might be getting another cold. I hope it was just overtiredness because I really don't want another cold.

I also don't particularly wanna watch the Idols sing "new country" tonight but you know I will. Mark does not share my enthusiasm for Sanjaya. He said, "they'll have a huge party when Sanjaya leaves AI." I looked at Mark and said, "yup, cuz it'll be the night he wins!" I l'd love it if he wins, that would be cool.

Mark and I agree that Melinda is far and away the best singer in the group and we've both liked her all along but there has always been something about Sanjaya that I like. I like the Stevie Wonder thing he did in his audition and I enjoy watching him. He's having fun and clearly bugging the asses of the judges so, yay. It's a tacky, cheeseball, guilty-pleasure show. It should be fun. Having said that, I'm sure he'll sing some really bad country song in a way that will make me smile. Even when I'm groggy, I'm sure Sanjaya can make me smile.

luckily, it didn't last too long, it's almost gone now. it's raining quite heavily though. hopefully there won't be too much flooding here in town.

I honestly can't believe that some morons in the media still feel that the climate change crisis is all in our heads. We should not have this much snow in April.

I like trains

one of things that I like about where I live, and it's something that many folks are irritated by, is the number of level train crossings we have. there is something kind of cool about being first in the lineup, watching a train lumber by.

So Mark's birthday is today. Happy Birthday Mark!! I think he's having a happy birthday so far. We did get down to the casino this morning and he won $140. Not bad huh?? Birthday boy luck I'm guessing. We took the winnings and did boring things like buy lunch, groceries and pet medicine.

We finally figured out that Syd was suffering with a fungal infection. As I type this, Mark is treating him with some fizzy tablets that are supposed to help clear this up. If it works, we should notice an improvement pretty quickly. It's hard to watch him mope around when he clearly is not a normally mopey fish.

The weather has been generally lackluster here today. We got spit on by rain and it's kind of damp and gross out so I think we're going to probably stay home for the rest of the day, maybe watch a movie. Nothing too taxing, just relaxing. Ooh, I'm such a poet huh?

lucky 13

by now, I'm sure you've realized that today is Friday the 13th!! I never really get why this freaks out folks so much. superstitions I suppose. silly stuff. I like the number 13. the movie, thirteen, wasn't all that it could have been but then, you can't like all of the movies, all of the time. Speaking of "thirteen," I saw another Evan Rachel Wood movie the other day, "Down in the Valley." It was okay, not bad actually. It's an interesting story about a young girl who has an affair with an older guy who thinks he is a cowboy. There are some interesting twists in the story that were interesting.

I'm really happy that the weekend has arrived. it's Mark's birthday weekend. officially, his birthday is tomorrow. We don't have a whole lot planned. Tonight, we really needed to go and get some groceries. We were both so brain dead after work though that we decided not to bother. That left us with the issue of dinner. We decided to go out. Standing in the door, coats on, keys in hand, we changed our mind and ordered a pizza. I'm glad we stayed home, I don't think I could have dealt with a Friday night restaurant crowd. Besides that, we now have pizza for breakfast tomorrow!

What we actually end up doing for his birthday tomorrow is pretty much up in the air. We will need to get groceries at some point (yes, we have no tomatoes!) but beyond that and a little bit of laundry, we have an open schedule. We're both feeling healthy again so if we do decide to go somewhere or do something wacky, we'll actually be able to do it. cool huh?

almost there

I know that this has turned into a short week for me (well really short - being off Monday and then being sick on Tuesday) but it's feeling really long.

The problem with days off (the only problem really) is that the work on my desk waits for me. So this week, having 2 days out of the office, the 3 days that I am in are sort of nuts. Today particularly was hectic. I was only at my desk for 2 hours. I'm tired now. The meetings were quite good but tiring.

The rain is getting me down too. It's been raining here this week, a lot. It's cold too, colder than it should be.

On the upside, I feel like I'm over my bug and my back is almost better. I'm such a whiner, aren't I?

Wednesday, April 11, 2007

incredible effort

my brain is well and truly fried.

I went back to work today and everything seemed to overwhelm me. whatever the bug was that I had yesterday was nasty and it's lingering a bit. I actually have an appetite again so at least that's something.

with any luck at all, tomorrow will much better and by the weekend, Mark's birthday weekend, I'll be 100%.

*fingers crossed*

introducing insult

so in addition to lingering minor back discomfort, I seem to have picked up a stomach bug somewhere.

I'm definitely not going to be making it into work today.

Quite frankly, I'll be lucky to make it to the sofa today.

On the bright side, if I'm not in a coma tonight, I can watch Sanjaya tonight.

Every cloud really does have a silver lining, doesn't it?

Monday, April 09, 2007

crap

I'm still sore.

I can almost walk upright but not very quickly. I'm moving very slowly.

This is no fun, it's not at all how I intended to spend my long weekend.

Yuck.

It could be worse I suppose, no I know it could be worse. It's just so easy to complain when things don't go the way you'd hoped they would.

happy easter

...I say, happy easter!

how's your Sunday going? I'm still doubled over with my stupid back. I am completely crooked. It's not nice.

What is nice though is that we had a lovely lunch at my mum & dad's today. We hadn't been out to see them in a while so it was a nice, albeit short visit. Because my back was all messed up, I couldn't sit for all that long so we sort of ate and ran.

Since we've been home, I've been laying down, just popping in to the computer every once in a while to queue up movies. we've been watching a lot of movies this weekend. it's been fun though, nothing too serious. We saw Happy Feet earlier. Very cute. Not too preachy, I was expecting it to be preachy because I'd heard that and read it in reviews. It had a message but in my opinion, it wasn't over the top.

Continuing in the theme of spending way too much time in front of the television this weekend, we're on pins and needles about the new episode of the Sopranos tonight. I'm a little sad that it's the end of the show but I'm sure that these last 9 episodes will be excellent.

ouch, I've now officially spent too much time in this chair. Back to the couch for me.

the health report

I'm happy to report that Syd seems to be feeling better. He's perked up a bit and while he's not chomping on his food as soon as we drop it in the tank, it's disappearing so, presumably, he's eating it.

I'm not so happy to report that my back is a little messed up. I think I slept in too late this morning, in the wrong position, with the window open, and I'm paying for it now.

Fortunately, we didn't have much planned for today. Mark will help me with the laundry (the carting of it up and down the stairs part) and we're going to pretty much veg out and watch movies. He told me he wanted to watch something really stupid so I think we're going to start with Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. If that's not stupid enough, I have Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny. I'm sure that will be enough dick and fart jokes to make up for all of the dramas, documentaries and foreign language films we've been watching just recently.

Friday, April 06, 2007

good friday

I love a long weekend.

today is a holiday here. I have booked off Monday as well so yay, four-day weekend for me!

we didn't really sleep in this morning, although we totally could have. I'm glad that I got up relatively early.

already this morning I have changed the bed, done a load of laundry, dusted knick-knacks in the kitchen and read a whole bunch of emails.

I am trying really hard not to care that it is supposed to snow all weekend, I'm just happy to have a whole day off with nowhere to go.

yay!

I still can't tell if he's eating. everything I read and the fish people I talk to say that he's okay, he looks good. he's just in a pissy mood.

Originally uploaded by Julep67.

I did not get fooled. Neither did Mark. We didn't actually decide not to try to fool each other, we really didn't think about it.

I guess we sort of got fooled by the weather. We went out, early afternoon to take a little drive and do a few errands. The sky opened up almost immediately after we left the house and we were sort of rained out. Not fun.

Some smart cookie in our office made up a coffee gag which a couple of folks actually fell for. We have free coffee where I work and someone set up a sign up sheet, posters, and collection can, to try and convince folks that we now had to pay 59 cents for coffee.

I can completely understand how people fell for it, after all, it was early Monday morning and goodness knows, before coffee, most of us would believe just about anything!!
