Our flower garden continues to surprise me.
When we first viewed this house, in November, we really didn’t pay any attention at all to the front yard if I’m honest. Our main concern was how to finish off the fencing in the back yard for the dogs.
Moving in January like we did, the first few months we were in the house, the front yard was completely covered in snow. I could tell that flower gardens did exist in the front because there were spindly bits of small bushes poking through the snow but it wasn’t really possible to figure out what was happening.
Earlier in the spring, while Mark and our friend Andy were installing the permanent fence at the top of the yard (we had installed some inexpensive snow fence during a freak mild snap which happened 2 days before we moved in), the front garden started to reveal itself.
Because had such a snowy, cold winter, the tulips and daffs were late in coming. We were pretty impressed when we saw them start to bloom. Neither of us is great at gardening but we enjoy a pretty blossom as much as the next person. As the weeks passed, more things were popping out and I could sort of figure out what some things were. Thankfully, my mum is a wonderful gardener and she’s been able to help me formally identify things.
Fortunately for me, the woman we bought the house from really seemed to know what she was doing in terms of how to plant perennials. I have not planted any annuals and there has been constant colour, in the numerous flower beds on our front yard. From what I can see, we should have things which will continue to bloom well into the autumn. We’re doing our best to keep up with some basic weeding but with everything else we need to do this year, I can honestly say that while we are enjoying the parade of mystery flowers, it’ll be a year or two before I can give it any proper attention.
I will, however, stop and smell the roses, poppies and peonies as they come and have been taking a few photos here and there. This garden is something I would have never done myself but I must admit, even in it’s semi-neglected state, it is pretty.

clear air!
The clean air has returned to our sunny little town.
I was pleasantly surprised this morning in the garden. I went out back to water the garden and was hit with a lung full of gorgeous, clean, cool air.
It's incredible what a different a day makes.
I can't wait to spend the better part of today outside, breathing fresh air. What do you have planned?

hornet's nest
if there is a text book description or a photo of what a perfect summer day should look like, I'll bet that it looks a lot like today did.
After several super hot, mega sticky, humid days, we had a full day of clear blue skies, fresh air and warm temperatures. It was not stifling, you could actually breathe. The sun was lovely, not oppressive.
We were in the pool on three different occasions and spent the bulk of our day outside. We came in a little while ago to make some dinner and to avoid the mosquitoes which, I'm sure, are out there now looking for me.
Speaking of neighbours, do you like this little nest? We're inclined to leave it be. We had one last summer and the hornets left us alone. We figure that if they aren't hurting us, we should leave them be.
Of course, one sting and the whole game could change. For now, we are having a peaceful co-existence in the yard.

garden fresh zucchini
Don't these look lovely?
Mark planted two zucchini plants in his little garden this year. This is his first attempt at a veggie patch. We had these two beauties in our salad for lunch yesterday. There were two more today which we grilled for dinner. Delicious. Out of the garden and onto our plates. Too neat. Reminds me a little of the Chicken Lady saying, "right out of my body and onto your plate" but not really.
Wasn't the weekend just lovely?? We had a great weekend. There was lots of time for sunshine and splashing in the pool. We both got some things done around the house that needed doing. All in all, it was lovely. I may have gotten a little too much sun but I'm not sore so it may not be too bad. I seem to have a tonne of freckles on my arms though. I don't remember so many freckles on my arms before but maybe I did and just didn't notice.
It's amazing how much my mood improved once the rain stopped. It's really been getting me down lately only I hadn't realized exactly how much until it stopped.
I think it's supposed to be a mostly sunny week this week so that's good. And it's a short week for us too. We've had Friday booked off for almost a year now because we want to see the Simpsons Movie early in the day. Can't wait for that!! Anyway, I hope you all had as good a weekend as we did. This is really what summer is supposed to feel like!

Mark's garden grows
I really really really really really thought that I'd be outside by now.
All day at work, and it was a longish day, I kept thinking to myself, I can stand the humidity because when I get home from work, I can get into the pool.
As we pulled onto our street though, it started to cloud over. As I type this, it's getting darker and darker and there is a storm watch in effect for the region.
fun huh?
Now, I'm not complaining about the rain, goodness knows that even though we've had a lot of it lately, we can use it. It's actually nice to now have to water the garden.
Having said that though, it would be nice to have one sunny evening.
Over the course of our entire week off, we did not get into the pool once.
Not once!
No fair!!
I'm really hoping for some sunshine this week.
Hopefully that's not asking too much.

recycling or yard waste?
today was literally a perfect summer day, and it's not even summer yet. not offically anyway.
I woke up this morning with a head full of allergies and actually had quite a bad headache. eventually I got myself together though and we went out and did some errands. the errands were of the drop stuff off at the municipal compost heap and go to the garden centre variety. I planted flowers last weekend and this weekend Mark is planting veggies. We needed some dirt and peat moss and some extra patio stones (for the pool area, not for the veggie garden). We actually got a great deal on everything we needed for the yard at a large, Canadian hardware chain store, much to the surprise of both of us.
After the work was done, we did some floating in the pool. I love floating in the pool. We have discovered that our little water bottles (the ones that are similar to nalgene but are not) can hold a whole bunch of ice and a "cooler" beverage. They make the perfect little cocktail for pool floating. nice!
Of course, now, headache + medicine + errands + sunshine + water + vodka = really sleepy me...and it's only early. I'll get my second wind yet, I'm sure.
yay for sunny weekend, so far, this one is excellent!

Mr. Robin
The sunshine fills our backyard!!
Really, honest!!
This huge, horrible, tree branch, which was hanging into our yard from our neighbours, was removed today. The whole back yard is now full of sunshine. It'll make being in the pool this summer, so much nicer! Not to mention, we won't have all of those flicking seeds in the water, mucking up the filter.
Our yard is looking lovely. It's all weed free, neat and tidy. Our neighbour (not the ones with the branch) even tuned up our lawn mower today. It looks like brand new and it's running like a dream.
Have I mentioned before how much I love this neighbourhood?? Around here, folks actually help each other out, it's amazing. Such a switch from our old place, just around the corner. People actually talk to each other, amazing huh?
We literally moved around the corner, 2 stop signs away from our old house, but it's like a different planet. It's a good planet though, no mean aliens or anything, just friendly folks who watch out for each other.
who knew huh?

blooming trees
everything is blooming!!
it's great actually, it's green specifically. stuff's growing.
our yard looks good. the front lawn is like some gorgeous, fuzzy carpet.
soon, it'll be thistle free but for now, watch your toes.
I'm so glad that spring is here. being outside is lovely. it's sunny and nice but not hot. it's a good temperature actually, one you can work in. not that I'm working all that much. supervising is something I can do though, and have been, in bits and pieces. it's good.
