Coldest Night of the Year

Was outside with the dogs a little earlier this evening.  The line, "now the sun is lurking just behind the Scarborough horizon..." was going through my head while I was encouraging them to stay out and do what needed to be done.  All the time, I just wanted to run back into the house.

Once I was back inside, warm and toasty, the line kept floating around in my head.  I found this, not an original video but the sound is good.

Stay warm folks, snuggle with the ones you love, and remember, spring is just around the corner!

12 tissue boxes of Christmas

ugh.

Mark made tzimmes with a potato kugel topping. Note how my plate had nothing but fresh veggies on it! #Christmas #dinner #family #mealOn the eve of Christmas Eve, I got sick.  I am still sick.  I have the bug that will not quit.  I am stuffed up, tired, sore, head achey and generally miserable.  I think Mark may be coming down with it too.  It's like a gift that keeps on giving.
I woke up on Tuesday morning, feeling spectacularly crappy and basically spent the day, in a fog, on the sofa with the dogs, hiding under a blanket while sipping tea and eating oranges.  Now, that would not be a bad way to spend the day if it weren't for the fact that I felt like hammered crap.

Wednesday morning arrived and I needed to do just a little bit more baking.  I had actually baked a couple of batches of cookies on Monday and needed to get at least one more thing made before Christmas arrived.  Every year, I make Skor Toffee Bit cookies for my dad.  I had forgotten to get the bits with my shopping on Sunday so Mark bravely faced the grocery store for me on Monday and picked them up for me.  There was no way I was not making these cookies for dad!!

While the cookies turned out okay, I realize now that I should have never done them.  In my fuzzy state, I ended up adding double the sugar to the recipe.  Luckily I realized my mistake and was able to double everything else (except the Skor bits, I ended up using a package of butterscotch chipits in addition to the bits) and save the batch.  By the time I got them done, every square inch of counter space and my dining room table were covered with cooling cookies.  I realized I was done and the baking had to stop.

Christmas day was nice.  We saw my family and had a lovely meal but I would have enjoyed it more if I had been able to breathe a bit more.  My brother and his partner were here from Ottawa and it was great to see them.  My mum is getting over the same bug I have so we were a great pair!!

Boxing day has been quiet for us.  Being sick is NEVER fun but being sick over the holidays is particularly yucky but at least we're not expected to be anywhere anytime soon.

I've been struggling with a really bad cold all week. I woke up with it on Saturday morning and can't shake it. I'm heading to see my doctor this afternoon about it. I'm really nervous that it could develop into something more.

I hope it's not but I'd rather get checked out than leave it for a week. My nose and throat cannot take it!

disappointed

I checked my work email from home this morning and realized that as shitty as I still felt, I had to drag my butt into the office. Fortunately, the big last minute project that was waiting for me came with some help from my awesome co-workers. All day though, I was either freezing cold or really warm. I don't think I'm quite over this bug yet.

When we got home tonight, the construction guys had actually poured the concrete for our new sidewalk. They did not, however, leave us with a path to get into our yard. It rained again today and our street is completely covered with muck. We had to walk up to where they were pouring and cross onto a neighbour's lawn, in the middle of them working. Not good. It seems odd to me that they couldn't put a board down for folks to walk into their own homes. I will be so glad when this is over.

In other not so good news, I read this when I got home and was disappointed and disgusted but not entirely surprised. Stupid people suck.

Man Arrested In GA For Tying Noose Around Tupac Statue
By Roman Wolfe

Police in De Kalb County, Georgia have arrested one individual and are investigating a series of racial attacks at the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts, after vandals tied a noose around the neck of a bronze statue of slain rapper, Tupac Shakur.

According to police, the first incident occurred early Saturday morning (October 20), when vandals defaced the building and tied a noose around the neck of the statue of Shakur, which is located in the center's Peace Garden.

A second attack also occurred on the statue of Shakur, when vandals drew crosses and wrote rants about Hurricane Katrina and various record labels.

The attacks are being investigated as hate crimes by the De Kalb County Sheriff's Office and police are seeking additional suspects.

"We thank everyone for their prayers and support," Tupac's mother Afeni Shakur said. "Although our hearts are temporarily in pain, our spirits have already forgiven the perpetrators. Hate comes in all colors and genders therefore we will use this act of hate and ignorance to bring our community together and to pray for the healing of those who harbor such feelings."

Due to the attacks, the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation (TASF) recently began fundraising efforts to construct a fence around the parameters of the Center to secure the property.

"With God's guidance, the work of the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts and Peace Garden will continue to positively impact and transform our community," Shakur added.

On Saturday, November 10/4, TASF will host its 2nd Bi-Annual Film Screening with a rededication service of the Peace Garden.

The event is free to the public.

Donations to help erect the fence to protect the TASF can be sent to: TASF, 5616 Memorial Drive, Stone Mountain, GA 30083 or at http://www.tasf.org/ and http://www.2paclegacy.com/

impractical joke

This is the first time in several hours that I've felt even part way normal. The tired feeling I had yesterday (with the not mentioned before pressure in my ears and watery eyes) was the start of a cold I've been fighting. I didn't sleep much last night but managed to get some naps in this morning.

Between tea and water and soup, I've been either running to the loo or snoozing all day. I just dragged my butt into the shower and that has definitely perked me up. Thank goodness. I didn't go to work today and I feel really badly about that. Stuff's busy right now and the last thing I needed was to miss a day this week but sometimes you just have to. I'm sure my office mates (I share an office with 3 other people) will be happy that I kept my germs to myself today.

groggy

For some reason, last night and Sunday night, I didn't sleep well. About once every hour or so, I'd wake up, look at the clock, and then take about 15 minutes to fall back to sleep. It also seemed to take me a really long time to fall asleep.

I'm sleepy, and tired. I think that maybe some noisy neighbour or critter is waking me up, banging around out in the neighbourhood.

it's odd. ordinarily, I'm a very good sleeper. I close my eyes, I fall asleep, I don't fall out of bed too often. it's all very orderly.

I hate not sleeping well. It makes me feel tired and today, for a few moments this afternoon, I thought I might be getting another cold. I hope it was just overtiredness because I really don't want another cold.

I also don't particularly wanna watch the Idols sing "new country" tonight but you know I will. Mark does not share my enthusiasm for Sanjaya. He said, "they'll have a huge party when Sanjaya leaves AI." I looked at Mark and said, "yup, cuz it'll be the night he wins!" I l'd love it if he wins, that would be cool.

Mark and I agree that Melinda is far and away the best singer in the group and we've both liked her all along but there has always been something about Sanjaya that I like. I like the Stevie Wonder thing he did in his audition and I enjoy watching him. He's having fun and clearly bugging the asses of the judges so, yay. It's a tacky, cheeseball, guilty-pleasure show. It should be fun. Having said that, I'm sure he'll sing some really bad country song in a way that will make me smile. Even when I'm groggy, I'm sure Sanjaya can make me smile.

curvy snow

Valentine's Day brought with it a huge ass snowstorm.

In this part of the world, we didn't get much of a dump of the white stuff as others did. I must say, we're always a little amused when Toronto gets a load. It's beyond amusing to wonder if they'll call in the Army again!

Mostly it's just been really cold here recently. I'm getting tired of it. Not so much the cold as the boots. I hate wearing boots because it feels like I spend most of my day getting in and out of them. Tying and untying shoes and boots...sometimes my sock goes with the boot and I feel like I'm back in Mrs Roach's kindergarten class again, hopping around on one socked foot, trying to avoid putting the naked foot on the melted-snow-puddle covered floor. My sock feels soggy in my shoe right now, just remembering that.

I'm also sick of dry skin. No matter how much I loofah or how much shea butter I use, I feel like a snake who is just about to shed his skin.

Dry skin and soggy socks. Those two things, coupled with the act of unlocking a deadbolt while wearing mittens are really what winter's all about for me this year. I'm looking forward to giving up all three. Anytime now!
