workshops about social media - I seem to get a lot of emails at work, promoting workshops and courses which promise to help folks use social media to build their business/brand/whatever. Social media stuff to me, you either get it or you don't and going to a conference or workshop to try to figure it out seems futile. If you really think your organization needs to utilize stuff like "the twitter" and you are totally clueless, maybe it's time to find some resources to hire someone to do this stuff for you. Like most things in life, anything worth doing is worth doing well. A half-assed approached to it is not better than no approach at all.
the secret code of cell phones - I'm due for a hardware upgrade on my phone (not a full upgrade, I'd have to wait until May for that). We tried to go to my cell phone providers "store" on the weekend but they weren't open. In the end, we landed up at Best Buy and were forced to talk to two extremely condecending people who actually tried to make us feel dumb and couldn't help us. They could only see about 1/2 of my account and in the end, could only help me if I was starting a new contract. I just don't understand all of the secrecy around upgrading your phone. I point blank asked exactly how much it would cost for a specific phone and I was given 3 different prices before I was told I should probably go back to my providers store. Not helpful, not even close.
why I haven't posted in so long - I have no idea why I stopped posting here. Maybe I felt like I should just use this as a place to either bitch or talk about my dogs. Given that it's my space, I should be able to bitch and talk about my awesome dogs all I want. I think that's what I'm going to do and anyone who doesn't like that can suck it and stop reading!

thawed
For the past few days the weather has been chilly here. Damp and cold. I've had a really difficult time regulating my temperature. For the most part, I've been cold, frozen actually. This morning my hands were so cold that my fingers were aching.
I just got back from a reception. I think that there were about 150 more people in the room than should have been there so the place was toasty. I'm now overheated but I know that I'll cool down soon. It actually feels not too bad, being this warm.
It's a short week at work so my timing feels slightly off on everything that I'm supposed to be doing. In a way, I'm glad that it's already Wednesday but in another, I'm freaking out because hey, it's Wednesday already!!
Thinking about how I'm feeling today, I would say that there seems to be no pleasing me which is about as odd as me being cold all of the time. Something strange must be happening in the universe and I'm just caught up in the middle of it.

waiting for spring
I look at this photo and think about how it was overflowing with beautiful impatiens last summer. Summer feels like a million years ago right now.
We've been in the storm zone for over 24 hours now. Last night, on the way home from work, we did a couple of errands, banking, gassing the van, a couple of things at the grocery store. While we were putting the groceries in the back of the van, it started to snow a little bit. By the time we were finished dinner, I could hardly see the neighbours across the street and the dog was going a little bonkers.
The forecast had called for some snow overnight and then a break this morning. It was to start up again this afternoon. When I got up, it had stopped snowing but there was a lot of it on the ground. Our deck railings had been clean yesterday but today they had about 4 inches of snow on them. Around mid-coffee time, it had started snowing again. This sucked in a huge way because we had to go out. Had to. See, a good friend of mine is turning 40 on Monday. He lives out of town and his girlfriend planned a surprise party for him, for tonight. I can talk about it here right now because it's past the surprise part. Anyway, I'd offered to get a cake, I'd ordered it last week and needed to pick it up and deliver it to the venue today.
We took a chance on a window of no snowing at around 11:30 and went out to get the cake (and some beer for our snow plowing neighbour). Literally, we had just enough time to do what we needed to do. As we were dropping the cake off, the freezing rain started. I could see it bouncing off of the cake box.
At the moment, we're not at the party. The bottom of driveway was filled in by the plow and it's a frozen mess. Our neighbour did our driveway this morning and will do it again tomorrow morning but there has been a lot of accumulation and it's pounding ice pellets right now so we're stuck in the driveway. Hell, the dog wouldn't go outside to pee until I put boots on and a coat and stood out on the deck. It's that bad outside!!
I feel terrible about not being at the party but the cake is there. I know that the honouree and his family made it into town safely and I'm sure that they are staying in the hotel next door to the party venue so they should be okay tonight while it's storming.
Surely to goodness this is the last big storm of the season. It seems so strange to me that it's snowing like crazy outside and the time is changing tonight. But no worries, there is no such thing as climate change, right?

Cat Puppet
How cute is this puppet?
My mum made it for my cousin's daughter and I think that it is absolutely adorable.
Today flew by very very quickly. I was surprised actually. It was a super good kind of busy at work which I always like. Busy is always better than not, for me anyway.
I've been alternatively amusing and irritating myself by reading this page today: http://www.kcal.ca/. It's really too late to do much about the stupid thing except complain (which we do) but really, it's sort of like picking at a scab. It doesn't help and it can make you feel worse. When I'm not feeling bad though, I am amused so, there is something to said for that.

working hard or hardly working?
The other day, Mark was talking to one of the contractor types who is working on our street. The weather was very cool earlier this week and we've been concerned about the paving (or lack thereof) and the new sidewalks which have yet to be installed. The contractor told Mark that they would be paving and putting in the sidewalks starting late next week. Mark was happy to hear that, when he told me this (on the way home - he picked me up after talking to this guy), I was pleased because it seemed that they may be done before halloween.
By the time we drove up our street (less than an hour later) guys were back on our block, tearing shit up again. This particularly creepy looking guy (who was smoking a stinky cigarette I might add) advised us to park on the street because they were starting on the sidewalks - at 4:30 p.m. So, once again, our street is ripped to shreds, we cannot park in our driveway, the weather has turned to shit and we have to climb over trenches to get in and out of the house.
I'm not impressed, not by a long shot. And today, to add insult to injury, poor Mark has a killer migraine. Not really fair is it?

it's good to have a friend like robin
my friend robin sent me this link today. how cool huh?? we're planning to be in the line on saturday morning. what a deal, I can't wait!! it'll be so much nicer to collect the rain water in a barrel than in the basement!
my week is toddling along. yesterday I was in a course all day learning the "principles of project management." it was an excellent course, the component on how to run better meetings alone was well worth being away from my desk all day for, seriously! tomorrow, unfortunately, I'm away again, all day. it's a professional development day for everyone in our area. I'd be telling a huge fib if I said that I was looking forward to it because I'm not. I'm more about obtaining actual skills and less about touchy feely stuff. I'm trying to give myself an attitude readjustment though, just out of respect for the amount of work my colleagues have put into the day. it's hard to create a program that will be fun or informative for 120 people. some of us will just need to suck it up I guess.
