Way Back Wednesday - Wouldn't it Be Nice

Pet Songs has been a favourite record of mine for a really long time. For Way Back Wednesday today, I'm sharing a tune from that classic 1966 Beach Boys album.

A couple of years ago, Bill shared this clip with me and each time I re-watch it, I love it more. In 2016, to celebrate 50 years since the release of Pet Sounds, Brian Wilson, Al Jardine and Al's son Matt, recorded this version of "Wouldn't It Be Nice."

Take a look if you have a few minutes because the clip intros by Al and Brian at the beginning are lovely and seriously, Matt does a fantastic job on this!

Happy Hump Day kiddos, stay safe xo

Happy times together we've been spending
I wish that every kiss was never ending
Oh, wouldn't it be nice?

Because It's Tuesday - week of March 3

Hey kids.

I'm home in bed with a weird bug so I'm not going to say much about today's cover. I will say this, I think it's one of the most beautiful songs that the Beach Boys ever recorded and David Bowie's cover of it is stunning
.

Enjoy, "God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys (from the remarkable Pet Sounds LP) performed by the wonderful David Bowie.

I may not always love you
But as long as there are stars above you
You never need to doubt it
I'll make you so sure about it

Because It's Tuesday - week of January 14

Well, finally, I'm back.

I had a wonderful break in BC. Being away for 3.5 weeks made my re-entry to Ontario and work a bit difficult. Fortunately, last week, I only worked for 2 days so that definitely helped.

Just a quick post today, to start off the new year here. Over the weekend, during a crappy rain / freezing rain storm, I took some time off to veg out and watch some TV. One of the things I watched during the storm was a documentary on Netflix about the 1960's music scene in Laurel Canyon called "Echo in the Canyon." It is hosted by Jakob Dylan and it's definitely worth watching. He interviews John Sebastian, Lou Adler, Tom Petty, Michelle Phillips and many others. In addition to sharing the original songs of the era (by The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, The Association, etc.), Jakob and some friends (including Beck, Cat Power and Fiona Apple) performing their versions of these same songs.

The cover I'm sharing today is Jakob Dylan's version of the Beach Boys song "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times" (from Pet Sounds). I actually prefer the Jim James version but I found this clip from the movie and thought I should probably share this instead.  Hope you enjoy it and if you haven't listened to it lately, I just think that there is never a bad day to close your eyes and listen to the wonderful Pet Sounds.  Thank you Brian Wilson!

They say I got brains
But they ain't doing me no good
I wish they could

Because It's Tuesday - May 28

Although it's still officially spring, over the weekend, the first taste of summer hit Kingston.  We had a rare, sunny, warm sunny.  It didn't rain for the first time in a while and there was even a bit of humidity in the air.

With summer weather comes thoughts of summer music.  Because it's Tuesday, as you know, I'm sharing a cover with you today.  I can't think of any band more often associated with summer than the Beach Boys.  The song I'm sharing today is a cover of "Little Honda" by the Queers.  Honestly, for me, this is one of those songs were I prefer the cover to the original (both are fabulous but...).

I hope you enjoy it and if it ends up being rainy and yucky today remember, summer really is just around the corner.  Happy Tuesday kiddos xo

Way Back Wednesday - Wouldn't It Be Nice

It's Way Back Wednesday today so that means I'm sharing an older tune with you today.

The song I've selected is from one of my favourite records, The Beach Boy's Pet Sounds.  The song is "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and I've picked it for a number of reasons.  First, it's a great song and I have loved it for as long as I can remember.  Second, it's on theme for today, for me anyway.

I'm home today while plumbers tear up my basement and do some repair work.

I've been saying to myself...wouldn't it be nice if this stuff just magically fixed itself without the noise and mess? Wouldn't it be nice if someone else paid for it for me?  Wouldn't it be nice if the weather wasn't so crappy today (bad enough to have folks traipsing in and out of the house, does it have to be rainy and wet too?).

It's been a huge amount of work, preparing for today.  I feel like I have met or at least talked to everyone who works for Utilities Kingston and I know my plumber and his office manager much better than I ever thought I would.  Probably the only silver lining in all of this is that I'm able to have a sump pump and back flow valve installed.  Given how much water has become an issue the past couple of years, doing some flood prevention will bring me some peace of mind.

Hope you're able to have a peaceful, mess free Wednesday... and while you're at it, enjoy some Beach Boys xo

Because It's Tuesday - week of May 8

Brian Wilson is a gem.  My favourite Beach Boys record is Pet Sounds and one of my favourite songs on that album, despite the fact that I am an atheist, is "god only knows."  I remember the first time I heard David Bowie's version of it, I was in high school and I immediately loved it.  His interpretation of it is beautiful, his voice sounds amazing, so very Bowie...

Anyway, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do, even after 30 some years, I still love his version (of course, my favourite will always be the Beach Boys version but this one is very very good).  xo
