Cancon Thursday - Young and Wasted

Hawksley Workman. You're quite a guy. You've entertained us as we've been stuck at home, from your father-in-law's basement at first and most recently, from your brand new basement. I've so enjoyed each "Hawksley Night In Canada" show, in particular I like the pet segments. You make me laugh and cry and it's always a good time. Thank you.

Now, in addition to providing us with isolation entertainment, you release a beautiful new record. "Less Rage More Tears" is a fantastic name for our pandemic times and the album contains a collection of wonderful, thoughtful songs. One of the things I love the most about his writing is that I'm always hearing new things in his songs, songs I have listened to dozens of times. All of a sudden, a lyric will jump out and it's like I'm hearing it for the first time. Brilliant. 

I had a really difficult time picking just one song to share here on Cancon Thursday. In the end, I decided on "Young and Wasted." Honestly, the clincher for me was the line about the wartime bungalow. I am living in a cosy (not cold) wartime bungalow in Kingston, Ontario. It was built in 1943 not too far from the old Alcan Plant. Many men who lived in my neighbourhood in the 1940's returned from the war and went to work at Alcan.

Cancon Thursday - Battlefords

So on Thursdays, I share a Canadian song or artist. Today I'm sharing a song by Hawksley Workman, Battlefords (I really love this song!). 

The last show I had tickets for before we all got sent to our rooms was the Kingston date for the Hawksley Workman / Sarah Slean tour. A few weeks ago, I watched a wonderful streamed event called "Hawksley Night In Canada." It was the closest thing I was going to get to seeing that show (it's been rescheduled but that's months and months away). Broadcast live from his father-in-law's basement in Peterborough, HNIC was super fun and included a fun phone in segment (Hawk Talk) and a Pet Song.

Cancon Thursday - Piano Blink

Well, as it's Cancon Thursday again, I'm sharing a really lovely song by a terrific Canadian singer-songwriter.

My cancon pick today is "Piano Blink" by Hawskley Workman from his 2008 "Between The Beautifuls" album. It's a sweet sounding song about the promise of a new relationship and the heartbreak that can follow as things break down over time.

I'm keeping this short because for some reason lately, Thursdays have become stupid busy for me.

CanCon Thursday - It's Really Starting To Snow

The weather has been unseasonably warm this week.

I deserve lots of thanks for that kiddies. You see, over the holiday weekend, I packed away my summer clothes.  Of course, as soon as that happens, the weather sends in a system of hot mess and the humidex rises in our fair city.

I'm not a mega super fan of hot weather.  I enjoy moderate temperatures generally but can actually tolerate very cold weather pretty well.

As today is Thursday, it's officially Cancon day.  It doesn't mean that I wouldn't play a Canadian tune on another day of the week it just means that on Thursdays, I'm only going to share a Canadian tune with you.

Today, I'm going to share a song that reminds that winter is coming.  Cold, crisp, fresh air will replace the muggy, stale, stinky air we've been breathing in this week.  Lovely readers, today, I share with you "It's Really Staring To Snow" by the very talented Hawsley Workman.  Enjoy this, and the last little bit of summer.
