Because It's Tuesday - week of August 20

Well, it's Tuesday again.

Funny how it comes around like that every week.

So, because it's Tuesday, I'm going to be sharing a cover with you.

Back in the mid to late-80's, I was a deeply closeted fan of the late great Whitney Houston.  I know I had her first few albums and would listen to them on my Walkman.  No one knew.  I loved those songs, her voice was out of this world.  It was pure cheesy poppy fun and it felt lovely in my ears.

Recently, something popped into my YouTube feed that caught my eye and my ear.  It was David Byrne performing the Whitney House classic (from her second album, 1987's Whitney) "I Wanna Dance With Somebody Who Loves Me" on a recent episode of Austin City Limits.  Now, apparently, this is a song that he's long included in his live repertoire.

I've been a fan of David Byrne's solo stuff and of course, Talking Heads, for a very long time.  His version of "I Wanna Dance With Someone Who Loves Me" is so very David Byrne-y.  It's just fun and lovely and wonderful.

Hope you think so too xo

Don'tcha wanna dance say you wanna dance
Don'tcha wanna dance
Don'tcha wanna dance say you wanna dance
Don'tcha wanna dance
Don'tcha wanna dance say you wanna dance
With somebody who loves me
Dance

Cancon Thursday - Nicolas Bragg

If you read my pages with any regularity, you'll know that I am a big fan of Vancouver's cub.  Back in the 1990's, I would go see them whenever the opportunity presented itself and a new release was always a gigantic, big, huge deal!

Last year, over 20 years after the band broke up, a session that they recorded for CBC's Brave New Waves show (in May 1993) was released.  If you're interested in picking up a copy, you can click right here. It was great fun to hear them playing live again and, there's even an interview by Brent Bambury with Lisa M and Robynn from the original broadcast.

For Cancon Thursday, I'm sharing a cub song which was featured on the Brave New Waves session and also on their first album, Betti-Cola (and on the Mauler compilation).  I hope you enjoy Nicolas Bragg.  The video is lots of fun and will give those of you who weren't around back in the '90's to experience the cub phenomenon a glimpse into just how much fun they were.  The shows were always awesome, the songs were sweet and also a bit gritty and when I listen to the songs today, I still enjoy them now as much as I did back then.

Hope you can also love yourself some cub xo

Way Back Wednesday - Kiss me on the Bus

The other day, a heard a Bash & Pop song, for the first time in a really long time.  After listening to "Tiny Pieces" I decided that it had been way too long since I'd spent some time with The Replacements.  I couldn't remember the last time I'd deliberately listened to them and I ended up spending a good chunk of the day with them in my headphones while I was working.

In the old days, I listened to the Replacements, a lot.  Weren't they actually everyone's favourite band at some point?  (I'm pretty sure that the answer is yes for folks of a certain vintage)  So, today, for Way Back Wednesday, I'm going to share their performance of "Kiss Me On The Bus" from an Old Grey Whistle Test broadcast in 1986.

After you've listened to this, I would suggest pulling out your old copy of Tim and take a great stroll down memory lane.

Enjoy kittens xo

Kiss me on the bus
Kiss me on the bus
Oh if you knew how I felt now
You wouldn't act so adult now
Hurry, hurry, here comes my stop

Because It's Tuesday - week of August 13

Today is one of those sad milestone days in my family.  11 years ago today, we lost my cousin Kathy to cancer.  She had brain cancer and went to hell and back fighting it over 15 years. Kathy was older than me by 2 years, my first, first cousin.  They say that your cousins are your first friends and that's really true.  She was probably my very first friend and I miss her a lot.  I know that I'm not alone in that.  She was a sweet, funny, smart, lovely woman.  While her life was cut short, I'm so very grateful that I had her my life for as long as I did.  She was one of a kind.

When you have a chance, tell the folks you love how you feel about them and throw in a big hug for good measure.  Trust me when I say that you never know when it might be the last time you have a chance to do that.

As it's also Tuesday, I'm going to share a cover with you today.  Today's song is a quintessentially Canadian tune.  Written by Gene MacLennan, Snowbird was recorded by many artists but is most often associated with Anne Murray.  This version is performed by the wonderful Kathleen Edwards and Bahamas. It was originally recorded for a CBC Studio 211 special in 2011.

Enjoy xo

Spread your tiny wings and fly away
And take the snow back with you
Where it came from on that day
The one I love forever is untrue
And if I could you know that I would
Fly away with you

Not Guilty Just Pleasure - Something Sweet

Happy Friday to you.

I'd like to take a moment to wish my mum a Happy Birthday.  She's just about the sweetest, kindest, nicest person that you'll ever meet and my brother and I absolutely won the mom lottery.  I hope she has an absolutely amazing day. I love you mum!!

On a musical note (!), the song I'm sharing with you today is "Something Sweet" (just like my mum is) by the Shy Boys.  This a live version of the song. I've been listening to them a lot just recently and on some of their songs, I definitely get a Pernice Brothers vibe.  Of course, if you're going to get a vibe, a Pernice Brothers one is really quite good.  If you like this song, I'd strongly urge you to check out their Bell House album from last year.  It's 22 minutes of lovely pop music, it's really great.

Hope you dig this.  Happy weekend kiddos xo
