smells like Queen's Spirit

almost home
Originally uploaded by Julep67
Yesterday, flashing lights on the street drew my attention away from my monitor. A city police car had pulled another vehicle over, just across the street. The driver, a young woman, got out of her car, the officer got out of his and walked toward her. They hugged and started laughing. How nice of them to tie up traffic for a reunion huh?

This morning, once again, flashing lights drew my eyes toward the window. This time though, the lights were accompanied by the sounds of the pipes. That's right kids, the Queen's Bands are back in town.

Mark and I passed a couple of bandsies on our way down to campus this morning. They kind of stand out at 7:30 a.m. when they are dressed in the tartan and hauling instruments behind them. The local cops led the bands who led the gael leaders around campus. At the moment, large groups of frosh and their upper year leaders, are marching around campus, chanting and cheering and receiving basic Queen's spirit initiation.

As weird as it for those of us who are on campus 12 months out of the year to have the students return en masse after a quiet summer, the weirdness is good. The spunk and spirit of these first year students is infectious!

...I've noticed a larger than average number of mini-vans circling the ghetto this week...

...trucks are unloading in front of residences...

...road closures are starting to be posted...

...clusters of them have been spotted wandering up and down Stuart Street...

In 10 days or so, the students will be back. Campus will feel a little more noisy, a little more crowded and also, a little more fun. We totally enjoy the rest when they disappear in April but it's always kind of fun when they return in September.

I feel like I get two new years, every year... one in January, and one in the fall. It's not entirely unpleasant.

jock harty arena

jock harty arena

For weeks now, I've been meaning to take some photos of the front of the "new Jock Harty" before it's completely gone.

Over the summer, the guts of the arena were removed and at the moment, only the outer walls seem to remain. These walls are still very much attached to the PEC though, which is open for business. Maybe on the weekend I'll get over to the blasting site and take some shots of the hole.

It's a huge hole. The blasting at times shakes our building in a huge way. Some days, the tremors are small. As the Jock Harty disappears and the hole gets deeper, it's hard not to get more excited about the Queen's Centre. It's still years away from being completed but I can almost envision it now.

I had a special treat at lunch today.

This afternoon, I met a friend for lunch, we ate our brown-bag specials on a bench in the sunshine. About 1/2 through lunch, the parade of thundermugs marched right past us, en route to the park. For the first time in a few years, the frosh had a gorgeous sunny day to build their creations in. They are calling for rain on Saturday. I guess when you're in that pit of slime, a little rain won't matter that much.

Campus was a little noisy today which was nice. Yesterday, by the time I got home, I thought my head would pop off. It didn't, which is nice because I may want to one day wear a hat again. I'm still having a hard time realizing that it actually is frosh week again and that classes start up again next week and that fall is almost here. I'm not in denial, just surprised.

stuck in a trap

construction meets convocation

so this morning, I had to walk across campus to a training session.

if any of you spend anytime around campus, you will have noticed the massive amount of construction which is happening. I'm all about the construction, it's a good thing. change is good, the improvements are going to be fabulous! it's actually really exciting.

getting trapped inside the construction zone however, is not exciting.

I was walking between Ontario Hall and Grant Hall and saw that there was an opening in the fencing. I expected to see a walk way (I needed to get to Mac-Corry). There was no exit opening though, I had to walk about a 1/2 block south, near big trucks which were moving stuff around, and other equipment - through the mud I might add - to find an opening.

It was a little scary.

It really makes me glad that on a normal day, I don't have to do this too many times. I think that most folks will be happy to hide out in their offices this summer. I know that it's going to beautiful when University Ave is all fixed up later on this summer, today though, it was just a bit on the frightening side.
