The air quality is crap, it's oppressive actually.

Speaking of oppressive, well, maybe not oppressive but really annoying, we're getting an "LVEC." Aren't we lucky? I don't talk about this thing too much at work because many of the folks I work with are really excited about it and see it as a great opportunity to reinvigorate our barely surviving downtown core area.

Personally, I feel that it's a huge waste of tax payer money. We had an opportunity, a few years back now, to have a charity casino in our little town. The City felt that the negative social effects were not worth the economic boost it might provide to our community. Instead, they built the casino about 30 minutes east of here. Financially, it's been very successful and I wonder if the push for this LVEC isn't being driven in part by the sting of a bad decision and a missed opportunity.

In some ways, I think that a larger/newer/improved sport and entertainment complex is a good idea for this area. I really don't think that it's a good idea to plunk it down in the middle of downtown. I'd really rather see the money spent on road improvements instead of a project like this. Our streets are a disgraceful mess of pot holes.

Having said all of this, I doubt very much that I'll ever set foot in this place for any recreational reasons because I don't really care to watch hockey and I know that no bands I like would ever play in a place like that. But hey, "go LVEC!"

lazy hazy crazy days

...of spring?

You know it's going to be a scorcher around here when the haze is so thick in the morning that you can hear the fog horns from the lake. I can hear the horn right now. Yikes.

Hot! Hot! Hot!...indeed!!

Charming, but not entirely surprising. Our big baby of a PM is going to his corner to have a sulk it seems, rather than actually do his job.

Harper says he's finished with Ottawa press corps
Last Updated Wed, 24 May 2006 23:11:10 EDT

Prime Minister Stephen Harper says he'll no longer give news conferences for the national media, after a dispute led a number of journalists to walk away from an event when he refused to take their questions.

Speaking to A-Channel in London, Ont., Harper said "unfortunately the press gallery has taken the view they are going to be the opposition to the government."

"They don't ask questions at my press conferences now. We'll just take the message out on the road. There's lots of media who do want to ask questions and hear what the government is doing."

Since becoming prime minister in January, Harper has had a testy relationship with the national media in Ottawa. His staff has tried to manage news conferences by saying they will decide which reporters get to ask questions.

The press gallery has refused to play by those rules. "We can't accept that the Prime Minister's Office would decide who gets to ask questions," Yves Malo, a TVA reporter and president of the press gallery, told CP on Tuesday. "Does that mean that when there's a crisis they'll only call upon journalists they expect softball questions from?"

On Tuesday about two dozen Ottawa reporters walked out on a Harper event when he refused to take their questions.

That led Harper to say that from now on he will speak only to local media.

The CBC says it will continue to cover the prime minister. "If the prime minister chooses to take questions we will be there to ask them," said Ottawa managing editor George Hoff. "We will have a journalist there to ask questions," he said.

Harper's supporters said Wednesday they believed the conflict is being blown out of proportion.

"I think this will get sorted out over time," Conservative Geoff Norquay said during an interview on Politics on CBC Newsworld.

"I think both sides have an interest in sorting it out and I think they will over time. The reality is that every new government wants to keep a tight lid on its messages and this one in particular because it had the previous example of Mr. Martin who had so many priorities that they all turned to mush in the minds of the Canadian people. And that's why this government is tightly focused on its messages," he said.

late night...

I'm a little pooped, it's been an extraordinarily long day today. I had to work quite late tonight as we had an event this evening. The whole thing went really well and everyone seemed really happy, which is the main thing, really.

Stupidly, I got up at my normal time this morning so by the time I got ready to head for home (about an hour or so ago), I was blindingly tired. Of course, now that I'm home, I'm a little wired. It's that feeling of being really tired but you can't settle down to sleep. Hopefully that won't be the case, if I'm lucky, I'll be asleep before my head hits the pillow but right now, it doesn't feel like that.

Oh, btw, we had DVR'd AI5 tonight and it took us about 35 minutes to bop through the whole 2 hour show. We're both pretty pleased (but not entirely surprised) that Taylor won. What a nice change, to have a seemingly genuinely nice person win one of those things, and he loves music too. Hurray for the anti-Mariah!!

the birthday boys

Barely sure, but we did.

Seriously though, I think Joe had a swell time at his party today, Nat too (although honestly, I was more concerned about Joe given the fragile state of his health these days).

Joe's brother Nat and Nat's son Rob, arrived at Joe's place a little bit after 10 a.m. Mark and I arrived around 11:30 a.m. or so. We'd had to pick up the cake we'd ordered (from Costco, I can't stress enough how great that cake was!) but couldn't do it until 10:30 a.m. so we knew we'd get there a little later. My folks were planning to arrive around 12:30 p.m. We figured that staggering things out a little bit would be less overwhelming for Joe. That seemed to be good.

It wasn't a long drawn-out affair. After Joe and the residents on his floor finished their lunch, we brought the cake in. A few of his buddies stuck around too. The whole thing lasted about an hour I guess. Joe seemed to be stronger, and feeling better today than he had in a good long while. He's started back at his physiotherapy and we've noticed a huge improvement in his energy level and general attitude.

After the party, we went for lunch with Uncle Nat and Rob. We chose a place that was about 30 minutes west of here. Picking this place made it easy for them to get back on the highway when lunch was over and it put them 30 minutes closer to home. I wasn't feeling 100% this morning when I got up so all this running around has really taken it out of me. At the moment, we're both pretty pooped. Even though tomorrow is a holiday and we could "stay up late," I think we're going to crawl into bed.

It's really okay though, I don't feel much like doing anything as ambitious as painting today anyway.

We realized this morning that it was a year ago today that we took possession of our house. A lot (and I mean A LOT) has happened the year since we got this house. It's quite a milestone for us.

Unfortunately, it's been so wet and cold here this week that the wood is saturated and I can't paint it.

Guess it'll have to wait for a sunny/warm weekend. I don't think that this particular long weekend is going to be either of those things but, if it's shitty outside, I might get some stuff done inside for a change.

happy victoria day weekend kiddos...I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the sun actually shows it's face at some point!

His twin brother will be here as well. Funnily enough, it's his birthday too (...you say it's your birthday...). Joe's been through a crapload over the past year. He really is like an energizer bunny. This week, he seems to be feeling better than he has in a good long time. He's still confined to a wheelchair but he's back doing his physio therapy again so he could be up and walking by the end of the summer. That would be cool huh?

all day long, I felt sleepy, even though I had a decent sleep last night and worked out this morning. odd huh?

on the way home tonight, Mark was doing his usual, "home, home again, I like to be there, when I can..." and he was talking about how much he's looking forward to seeing Roger Waters play "Dark Side of the Moon" live in September. I suggested that it might be neat to have the Polyphonic Spree open the show (because they do songs about the sun...)

Anyway, I started singing Spree tunes in my head all the way home and couldn't wait to hear "Soldier Girl" when I got in the door. I'm still listening to said Spree right now and somehow, just hearing some songs about sunshine has made me feel better.

Yay!

Oh, btw, guilty pleasure confession time: Mark and I have actually watched the whole season of AI5. It's sick, we know it but we got glued to Taylor and Paris from the first show. I was miffed when Paris got booted because I really liked the girl (although I was happy to see the bald guy go last week). Anyway, we're both pulling for Taylor tonight. It would neat to see a guy who seems to genuinely love music and who also appears to be a nice person win one of these things for a change (especially someone who figured out how to squeeze a George Harrison/Beatles song into the competition). Either way, it's just a tv show but to see Taylor win would be nice!

Mark got me a copy of "Employee of the Month" for my birthday and, while it's silly, I spent a lot of time yesterday playing it. Between loads of laundry, I'd be glued to the computer, farting around with it.

It was way more fun that I would have thought but you really have to love spongebob to stick with it, seriously.

Overall, my birthday weekend was great. Mark wasn't feeling all that well yesterday, his stomach was kind of upset from something. Not sure what exactly but we're hoping it'll clear up soon. He's still feeling wonky today. No fun.

The time really flew by quickly. The week's just zip by too fast these days. I don't mind all that much when work days pass me by but when the weekends do that too, it's a bother.

I gotta tell ya, I'm sick of seeing laundry already. I have a feeling I'll be doing it all day today and I'm not thrilled about it. Today I'm actually kind of tired. I slept in a little later than I normally would and I feel like I could totally nap this afternoon. I doubt that I will but I feel like I could.

I've been having a great birthday so far. It's not quite over, almost but not yet.

We did go to Syracuse today, well, Dewitt actually. The first stop on our trip wasn't very good. Mark had been talking about iHOP for a long time. He'd not been to one in years and years and I'd never been so we thought we go to the one in Syracuse while we were there. Imagine our disappointment when we discovered it was closed due to a fire!!

Initially, we were disappointed but we quickly got over it. There was a Chili's around the corner so we grabbed lunch there. Honestly though, if it wasn't for The Office, we'd not have stopped there. It was okay but not great, our food was sort of cool but we couldn't be bothered sending it back (I just didn't feel like facing a microwaved plate!).

We did some shopping, tried Krispy Kreme donuts for the first time, basically had a really nice time. So we've just been home for a bit now, not sure what we'll do with the rest of the evening, probably watch a movie or something. We spent a lot of time on the road today and we're both a little pooped. Good pooped though, happy tired, that kind of thing. yanno?

The cake was yummy.

Tomorrow's my birthday and we're going to celebrate by doing some cross-border shopping down in Syracuse.

Yay!

Other than the ducks, there isn't much happening. The week has been busy, as expected, but very productive. I finally feel like I'm making a dent in the mountain of paper that is piling up on my desk.

This weekend, I hope to not think about work at all. It shouldn't be too hard to do. I'm really looking forward to a relaxing weekend.

Mark took it back to the place where it was tested last week, we had some work done on it and it actually passed. We got our stickers on the way home from work last night and we're good to go for at least 2 more years (or until we figure out if/when we are getting a new car).

Cool huh?

All of that crap in the pile either came out of the lawn or was pulled out from behind or beside our shed.

The people who lived here before, never threw anything out, I swear.

Oh well, it's all piled up now, ready to be hauled away and the yard looks gorgeous, just gorgeous (said in eye-witness "little britain" style).

Hurray for student landscapers, they just rock!!

The nice thing is that it's sunny and cool today, perfect landscaping weather! The fellows who are helping today are due here in less than an hour.

I'm really looking forward to this, it's going to make a huge difference in the yard and will simplify what we need to in terms of regular maintenance in a HUGE way.

Also, it's not even 9:30 a.m. and I already have 4 loads of laundry done. Go me, huh?

Poor Mark woke up with a screaming migraine this morning. I woke up with a back ache. We're both basically riding the sofa and watching a lot of television today.

On the upside, it's raining pretty heavily today so it's not like we could have done anything outside anyway.

See, sometimes there is sunshine in the rain.

No? Me neither. We talked about it after dinner but didn't bother. I felt tired and worn out from work and didn't figure that a cocktail would really help the situation.

We did have a really nice barbecue tonight though. The weekend looks like it is going to be kind of chilled. I really need to wash all of my sweaters and pack them away. My summer clothes are just begging to come out of hiding and I'll be glad to see them.

We've hired some students for Sunday. They are going to come over and do some of the particularly difficult landscaping stuff we need doing (digging up of railway ties and dead trees). Hopefully the weather will be good for them to do this, maybe nice and warm but not too sunny. That would be good.

Basically, my plan is to stay close to come and get some chores done. To putter really. I've had a particularly gruelling work week this week and feel the need for a huge break!

Today, we moved our office around. We had movers in to do the big stuff and then we had carpenters in to make sure that everything was safely affixed to what it needed to be safely affixed to. They also hung pictures and cork boards for us.

When I left the office tonight, things were coming together. I left my desk about 1/2 sorted out. The girls I work with were putting stuff back into cupboards. I really like where my desk was moved to, I think it's going to be nice and quiet in the new spot. I was right in front of the door and now I'm in the corner, next to the window. Once I'm settled, I'm sure it'll be really great.

Right now though, I'm just happy it's over. I'm a little stressed because I basically lost an entire afternoon today but it'll be worth it when we're all settled and sorted out.

Mark took our car for it's emission test today. It didn't pass. I was a little surprised because we'd just installed a new catalytic converter a couple of months ago.

After work, we stopped by the place we'd had the work done to get some advice and find out what our options were. Basically, what's going to happen is that we're going back to the place that did the test, they'll tell us what is wrong (for a fee) and we'll either get it fixed and pass the test, or we'll pay upto $450 in repairs and be given a 2 year grace period to either get it fixed or replace the car.

Fun times huh? I mean, it's been a really good car. My dad gave it to us almost 4 years ago and it's a 1993 car so it's had a good long life. We're going to start looking around for a "new to us" car. You know these days are coming but boy, it's no fun when they actually arrive, is it?

morning time

Just lately, it feels like the only time that I have to myself is in the mornings.

Before I started my new job, I used to be able to take a lunch break. I'd usually sit at my desk and blog while I ate my lunch but recently, it's not happening. I'm eating my lunch at my desk but I'm working full stop while I do it.

The reason for this is that I've still got tasks from my old job that are hanging around. They feel a bit like an albatross right now. That's not good.

I know that eventually, I'll be giving up those extra tasks and I'll be able to concentrate on my new job (which I'm really enjoying). The "in the meantime" time is tough though.

We're really busy at home too for some reason. It seems like every night after work, we're out running errands until 6 or 7. That wouldn't be so bad if we went to bed at 10 or 11 but we don't, we go to bed at 9. It's a short night.

Anyway, I'm sure this pace won't last much longer. I hope it won't anyway. I miss reading everyone's journals and just having time to chill out.

Yikes, I'm a whiney bitch, aren't I?
