Courtney Barnett is so far beyond brilliant that I don't have the words to describe it. Her lyrics are smart, sharp, biting, funny.
She's got a new album coming soon and you should all pre-order it because she's a genius and who doesn't want be a part of something like that!? Go watch this video and there is a link to the pre-sale site in the description. I don't ask you to do too many things but you should really do that. You'll thank me, it's not necessary but I know you will.
Before I do anything else, I want to wish my dad, the best dad ever, Mr. M.D.S. the happiest of birthdays. He's an original, a hard working, solid, dependable, honest as the day is long, man. We are so very lucky to have him in our lives and I feel so grateful to be his daughter. Love you Dad!!
Now...this week's cover...
Sometimes, the cover a song is just so much better than the original, you wonder what the original artist was thinking.
It's hard to shit on Michael Jackson's music and I'll not really do that however, I will say that the Civil Wars version of "Billie Jean" is so much more appealing to my ears than the original. It's just super sexy and I dig it.
Admittedly, I arrived at the Alicia Keys party late.
I've made up for it though and really enjoy her music, her voice in particular, so beautiful and strong... anyway, I've been listening to this particular song a lot lately and thought I'd share it with you.
Happy 420 day kiddos (and happy birthday Grandpa - I love you!!) xo
I actually didn't but sometimes I'd like to. As the song goes, when you fight the law, it typically wins.
Anyway, The Clash's perfect, classic cover of the Sonny Curtis tune "I Fought The Law" kicks ass. Always has, always will. Joe Strummer, how we miss you. I'm so glad that you left us so much awesomeness to fill our ears with.
Enjoy this kiddos and try not to tap your feet while you do! xo
Today we'll celebrate your birthday for the third time without you here.
You'd be 66 today if you were still around to have some cake and sushi.
The Birthday Boy.
Gracie and me and all of our friends and family, everyone who loved you, still love you and miss you every day. I wish you could hear the things people say to me about you, the stories they share about who you were and how much you meant to them. You touched people in a big way and left a hole in lot of hearts when you died.
I know you can't read this but it makes me feel good to write to you like this, let's me think for a second that you are still checking your email and you'll be able to understand how special you were. Again, I'm reminded of the note your beautiful friend Lynda sent me after you passed away, "he had the strongest spirit and presence of anyone I've ever known. Simply a complex, fascinating, charismatic human being unlike anyone I've ever known." She was so right. You were one in a billion...Happy Birthday Chef Mark xo
If you're a regular reader of my little blog you will know that I am a fan of Wilco.
A couple of months ago, I heard that Jeff Tweedy of Wilco would be coming to Kingston. Immediately, without hesitation, I bought two tickets and then texted my friend John. Jeff Tweedy in Kingston? How would that be possible, so excited was I!
John and me, waiting for Mr Tweedy
So, Sunday night, John and I sat in our awesome second row seats and were dazzled and amazed by an acoustic performance by Jeff Tweedy. I lost count of how many songs he played... I had submitted a request for "Hate it Here" for Mark (he didn't play it!). It was his favourite Wilco song and he would have been super stoked to have seen Mr Tweedy in our sleepy little town. Because tomorrow is Mark's birthday, I'm going to share this version of "Hate it Here" with you all. It's a full band, live version and it's great. Because WILCO! Am I right?!
Happy Birthday Mark, you'd be turning 66 tomorrow if you were still with us. We all love you and miss you, like crazy, yesterday, today and forever. xo
It's Mark's birthday this week so it's time for another Beatles cover and this week I actually have a video, a pretty great one too.
Not a huge fan of the Black Keys but I've always liked their version of "She Said, She Said" so I'm sharing it this week. It's a fun and crunchy version of a kick ass song.
Your music is sweet and your lyrics really appeal to me. I can listen to a song of yours on repeat for an entire day. Not always the same song though, I mix it up quite a bit. Like recently, I have been listening to "to know your mission" a lot.
I recently read that when he's not out touring and being a rock star, Jens is a wedding singer in his home town of Gothenburg. I'm going to encourage all of my engaged to be married friends to consider a destination wedding in Sweden... imagine how magical your wedding would be if you had the wonderful Jens singing just for you!!
I listened to a lot of Don Henley's solo stuff in the 1980's. Was never the biggest Eagles fan (although it was impossible to avoid them when I was a kid, they were played EVERYWHERE) but I really enjoyed Don Henley's voice and his solo stuff.
Anyway, a guilty pleasure of mine, which probably stems from listening to my mum's copy of Sonny and Cher's "look at us" LP so many many times as a child, is Cher. I really like her, I love her acting, I enjoy her music at times. She's a dynamo. When I stumbled across her cover of "Not Enough Love In The World" it was like those cold Reese's Peanut Butter Cups commercials... two great tastes that taste great together. Cher covering Don Henley! that's just about perfect.
Enjoy this audio (sorry, again, no video!) kiddos xo
