Can Con Thursday - Bud the Spud

Once again, it's Can Con Thursday here. Today, I'm sharing another song for my dad. He sure loved Stompin' Tom Connors and enjoyed watching this show "live from the Horseshoe Tavern." I'm sure he had it on a VHS tape at some point, and whenever it was on TV, he'd watch it.

When we were kids, we knew all the Stompin' Tom songs too. They were fun and Canadian. It was always a treat to hear songs about places we had visited (or wanted to visit) or things we liked (potatoes, ketchup).

Bud The Spud was recorded for the 1969 album Bud The Spud and Other Favourites. Apparently, it made it to No. 27 on the country charts, but I'm certain it was a No. 1 hit in our house.

Saturday Night

As I have mentioned before, I'm participating in NaBloPoMo this year.  Looks like I might just be able to make it to 30 days, in a row, of posting here.

In honour of this being the last Saturday in November, and because I'm lazy and needed some inspiration, I'm sharing a Saturday themed song with you.

When I was a little girl, this guy's voice was everywhere.  On the radio, on the stereo in the homes of friends and family.  He was, to me, the ultimate Canadian guy, a regular guy, just like the men in my life at the time.  I remember singing along to his songs, they were all very good for that, and stomping our feet, along with him, to keep the beat.

So, if you're a half way decent Canadian, you have figured out by now that I'm talking about the late, great, Stompin' Tom Connors.  I didn't know crap about cancon back then but I knew that he, Hank Snow, Tommy Hunter and Anne Murray were Canadian and that was a good thing.

Because it's Saturday in Kingston, I'm going to share "Sudbury Saturday Night" with you.  We're not exactly close to Sudbury but the sentiment expressed in this song can be universally applied to most small cities in Canada.  Enjoy xo

CanCon Thursday - The Ketchup Song

My brother and I joke that we grew up in a house listening to two kinds of music:  country AND western.  Now that's not entirely true, my mum had some Don Ho, Al Hirt and Beatles records in her collection (and others too!) but we heard a lot of late 1960's and early 1970's country / western / folk hits.

One of the more popular guys in our house was Stompin' Tom Connors.  I've always had a soft spot for Stompin' Tom, in particular, I loved this song.  I also love ketchup!  Sadly, that plant in Leamington is now shuttered and honestly, I have grown to prefer French's ketchup because it doesn't have the high fructose corn syrup in it that Heinz uses.  Back in 1973 though, when this piece of video was recorded (at the famous Horseshoe Tavern), Heinz was the King of Ketchup.
